CEPS PhD scholar will participate in the 2009 Emerging Leaders Dialogue, Beijing

Mr Lennon Yao-Chung Chang, a CEPS PhD scholar based at the ANU, has been selected as a participant in the 2009 Emerging Leaders Dialogue hosted by the Griffith Asia Institute in collaboration with Peking University.

Participants in the Dialogue must be outstanding research higher degree students who are advanced in their research program, and who will be able to contribute to a Dialogue on "Our Future Knowledge Economy". The Dialogue will be held on 24-25 October in Beijing.




Go8 Fellow, Professor Arkadiusz Lach, arrives at the CEPS ANU Program in Policing and Security

Group of Eight Fellow, Professor Arkadiusz Lach, will be located at the CEPS ANU Program in Policing and Security from 13 August until 1 December, 2009. Professor Lach comes from the Department of Criminal Procedure, Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Nicolaus Copernicus, Poland.

During his fellowship at the ANU, Professor Lach will look at the Australian model of criminal justice and the role of privacy in criminal proceedings.

'South Asia Masala' blog launched at ANU

Professors Kim Beazley (Chancellor of The Australian National University), Robin Jeffrey (Dean of the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, and Director of the ANU Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies) and Kent Anderson (Director of the ANU Faculty of Asian Studies) opened the new South Asia blog ('South Asia Masala') on July 24 in the foyer of the Hedley Bull building, ANU campus.




ANU hosts blog on South Asia topical analysis

CEPS Associate Investigator, Professor Sandy Gordon, and colleagues have established 'South Asia Masala' – the latest in a series of weblogs hosted by the ANU College of Asia & the Pacific.

Focussing on the countries of South Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka), South Asia Masala aims to deliver an admixture of interdisciplinary analysis that spans political, economic, cultural, social, developmental and strategic issues emanating from the region.

The authors are keen to attract submissions that rustle up academic and public debate on the region.

CEPS Visiting Fellow nominated for Next 100 series

Dr Raymond Choo, a CEPS Visiting Fellow, was one of 10 nominees in the Innovations category of the Next 100 Emerging Leaders selected by The Weekend Australian Magazine during early 2009.

Nominees were identified by The Weekend Australian Magazine as people who had just begun to make their mark and who were likely to make a difference in the next few years.

CEPS Associate Investigator receives international fellowship

CEPS Associate Investigator, Professor Sandy Gordon, has received a research fellowship in New Delhi from mid-October to mid-November 2009. The fellowship is with the Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis (IDSA), which is India's major security think tank in New Delhi.

As part of the fellowship, Professor Gordon will present a seminar on his research and provide a written paper, which he will subsequently publish.

CEPS Associate Investigator, Mr John McFarlane, has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism (PICT) at Macquarie University in Sydney.




Victims of crime campaigner honoured

CEPS Ph.D. Scholar, Ms Robyn Holder, has been awarded the Audrey Fagan Post-Graduate Scholarship for 2008-2009. It is an award established by the ACT Government for women in the ACT who are recognised or emerging leaders in the fields of law enforcement, care and protection, and professional support services for women who are victims of violence. Having had the privilege of working alongside the late Audrey Fagan, Ms Holder is honoured to have been nominated for the scholarship in her name.

CEPS Annual Report for 2008

The Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security (CEPS) was established on 1 January 2008, with funding support from the Australian Research Council, four Universities and a large number of industry partners. Its partnerships extend to a large number of associated researchers, both nationally and internationally. A report on the Centre's foundation year is now available.

CEPS PhD scholar receives travel grants

CEPS PhD Scholar, Mr Russell Brewer, has been awarded an International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) travel bursary and an ANU Vice Chancellor's travel grant. This support will enable him to take up a position as a Visiting Scholar over the summer months at the Berkeley Center for Criminal Justice at the University California, Berkeley. Whilst in the United States, Mr Brewer will undertake interviews with port authorities and stakeholders based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego.

CEPS Chief Investigator awarded

Professor Gabriele Bammer received the Ertas Transdisciplinary Scientists and Engineers Award, which recognises distinguished achievement in transdisciplinary science and⁄or engineering as evidenced by contributions to transdisciplinary education and ⁄ or research with the use of creative and innovative methods and visionary leadership. The award is one of several conferred by the Society for Design and Process Science (SDPS), a professional transdisciplinary society. CEPS Chief Investigator, Professor Bammer, was presented with the award in June 2009 at the 11th World Conference on Integrated Design and Process Technology, Taichung, Taiwan, where she also gave a keynote address, “Do We Need a New Discipline to Document and Transmit Problem-based Learnings?’
