
The ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security (CEPS)
ANU Program
Established on 1 January 2008, the Australian Research
Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security (CEPS) is a major research partnership between
The Australian National University,
Griffith University,
The University of Queensland and
Charles Sturt University. The Centre also
brings together a range of industry partners
that are committed to innovation and evidence-based research in policing and security.
The Centre's goal is to gain a better understanding of the origins, motivations and dynamics of crime and security threats.
Its objectives are to create significant transformations in crime, crime prevention and security policies, and to bring
about evidence-based reform in the practices of policing and security to enhance Australia's social, economic and
cultural wellbeing.

Professor Lawrence Sherman presents a biosocial perspective on policing

Lawrence Sherman is an Adjunct Professor at the Regulatory Institutions Network (RegNet), The Australian National University,
and Wolfson Professor of Criminology and Director of the Police Executive Programme and the Jerry Lee Centre for Experimental Criminology,
at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, UK.
On Wednesday 24th February, Professor Sherman will talk about the design of a new hot spots patrol experiment to be launched by
Greater Manchester (UK) Police in 2010.

Standing Group on Organised Crime (SGOC) includes numerous items

- A report on the 1st SGOC International Summer School on Organised Crime, held in Catania, Sicily, from 29 June 2009 to 11 July 2009.
The theme of this Summer School was "Analysing and Tackling Organised Crime: Theories, Practice and Policies."
- Three papers from the Summer School:
- The Construction of Evidence in Organised Crime Cases.
- The Historical Development of Security Concerns in the Caribbean Basin Region: The Emergence of Organised Crime as a Regional Security Threat.
- Czech Organised Crime and Social Opportunities.
- Advice about the 2nd SGOC International Summer School on Organised Crime, to be held in Leuven, Belgium, between 28 June 2010 and 9
July 2010. The theme of this Summer School will be "Understanding and Fighting Organised Crime in the New Europe."
- Initial advice about the 3rd SGOC Summer School on Organised crime, to be held in Skopje, Macedonia (date not advised). The theme
of the 3rd Summer School will be "Organised Crime and New Security Threats."
